The best free fireware alternative is Zone Alarm

For a basic firewall that has all the benefits of a paid one this is certainly a bargin. The paid version gives you more options but the free one definitely worth it.

Obviously I didn't think this needed further comment when it was first posted but I will now add that Zone Alarm is the firewall of choice that I use on the Classroom computers where I teach.
