Popular Software Resources

Postby Spock » Wed 2005 Mar 02 12:30

As this topic subject suggests, this topic exists to centrally list any URLs which get posted anywhere else in the Software forum. If the resource is good enough to send someone off site to see then it's important enough to let everyone know about.

Forum Moderators:
Please grab a copy of the URL to post in here along with a short explanation of the site our users are being sent to. Try not to just place a link to the original topic as this topic should be as stand-alone as possible.

Everyone:
I would appreciate it if everyone would help to generate input here.

For each listing I need:
1) URL = where to find the information
2) Title = name of site
3) Short description describing site
4) Main category, i.e., Freeware, Shareware, etc.
5) A first attempt at defining a sub-category, i.e., Utility (please include type), HTML, Text Editor, etc.

Once the data starts coming in, we will be able to compile the lists and create unified pages that will hopefully be fairly easy to understand.

[Added]
I will start with one of my favorites:
1) URL = http://pctalk.info/dl/NsPComplete.zip
2) Title = NotesPad Complete
3) The one text editor I used to use for almost everything. It only works with all flavors of Win98 and before but is the best I've found for a pure ASCII text editor.
4) Freeware
5) Text Editor

This page contains some problems faced by the end-user(you). A lot of links are off-site and some directed at Microsoft.com. like the: CD-ROM Drive or DVD-ROM Drive Missing After You Install Windows XP problem I believe Spock had not too long ago.

For one's daily-dose of "new" software:

1) URL = http://www.downloadsquad.com/
2) Title = Download Squad
3) Individual listings of (new) software that has "float someone's boat."
4) Titles / Articles run the full gamut (i.e., "soup to nuts")
5) Mac & PC Stuff

Two examples from today:

Google Earth's toy hunt - Today's Time Waster: Filed under: Fun, Internet, Google - Santa is coming to Google Earth! And its up to you to find the treasures that Santa's elves have left all over Google Earth! Starting December 12th, and finishing up on December 24th, a clue will appear outside of Santa's North Pole workshop every day. If you can solve it, you will be lead to a toy hiding in Google's satellite imagery. Don't worry if you get stuck, the whereabouts will be revealed the next day, when the next clue gets dropped. What are you waiting for? Start hunting!

How to setup WDS between a wireless router and an AirPort Express: Filed under: Features, Hardware, Macintosh, Open Source, How-Tos - Thinking about expanding your wireless network but aren't exactly sure how to go about it? Using my trusty Linksys WRT54G, a copy of DD-WRT and an AirPort Express, I was able to increase the range of my network, and also bridge my wife's office upstairs with the network in the basement. Here's how you can do it too. Ingredients: 1 Linksys WRT54G running DD-WRT; 1 Apple AirPort Express; MAC addresses of both; 15-20 minutes of your time; For those who don't know, WDS stands for Wireless Distribution System. It's a simple system that allows you to interconnect multiple access points wirelessly. Wikipedia, as always, has more information on the subject. Before we get started, as noted above, you need to have DD-WRT installed on your Linksys WRT54G, or on any AP/Router that supports it. Have a look at DD-WRT's hardware compatibility list to see if your hardware is supported. If you don't have DD-WRT installed, and are using a WRT54G, see these instructions on my personal blog on how to install DD-WRT. You'll also need to have already configured your AirPort Express. Process Scanner

Postby Walts » Fri 2006 Dec 29 6:58

1) URL = http://www.processlibrary.com/processscan/
2) Title = Process Scanner
3) A report on all processes currently active on your system
4) Business, Internet, Security, Utilities, Windows, Productivity, Microsoft, Freeware
5) PC Stuff

Process Scanner from Process Library - http://www.processlibrary.com/processscan/
(From Download Squard - http://www.downloadsquad.com/2006/12/27/process-scanner-from-process-library/)

It's happened to all of us at some time or another; our computer starts to act up, operate slowly, or exhibit some other sort of suspicious behavior. Since we're all chronic downloaders, we know there's a very good chance that some nefarious process is running on our machine that we'd rather wasn't.

In the past, this meant using a process explorer like the built-in Windows Task Manager or a better 3rd party option, and ferreting out process names that we don't recognize. Personally, I'd then simply punch the process name into Google, and check out the first few sites that came up - usually this would be enough to give me a good idea of what I was dealing with. But thankfully, I won't have to do that manual process any longer.

Probably the best known site for doing Windows process name lookups is Process Library. Thankfully, Process Library now offers a little utility called Process Scanner that you can download to your machine, run, and get a report back on all of the processes that are currently active on your system, and their likely security threat level and performance impact level.

It took me literal! ly less than 2 minutes to download, install and scan my system with Process Scanner. Thankfully, I didn't find anything to be worried about. But I'll keep it in my hip pocket as yet another great free security tool.
