Can't read bitmap

I downloaded jpeg images and I need to put them into bitmap to add some lines and designs. I copied and pasted to paint and it entered the bitmap file because you can see it on the list but it cannot read it, it says. Win 98se. Anyone help? Thanks

1. Right-click on the jpg file you wish to edit and select copy,

2. Open Paint and make sure the canvas is much smaller than the picture,

3. Use Ctrl-V to paste the picture into Paint,

4. Use Save-As to change the file type to bmp,

5. Edit and resave your picture.

I must be missing something. It plants it in the bmp. file but when I open it, sign says; This is not a valid bmp. file or format is not properly supported. And there is no image. I did make the canvas smaller and selected in the gray to paste with ctrl V. Soooo close but still no success.

Actually you want to paste into the white canvas. The reason you make it smaller than the picture is so you don't have a lot of extra white space all around it.

If you still haven't gotten it to work, come to class on Monday and I will go over it with you.

Got it, I was selecting the text instead of opening it and selecting the image. We need a dummy emoticon. I'll make one.

I don't think it really applies though. It's hard communicating with only text and sometimes the most obvious solution is hiding right in front of our eyes.
