Windows Update?

Postby Ben Last » Mon 2006 Jun 19 4:03

Is it possible to save the windows updates from the site so I can install them on other machines not on the net?

I think I heard you could but am unsure and would not know how.

I'm using Win98, also is it possible to save the updates for 98 whilst running a different OS? as I'd like to use someone else's faster connection.

Any advice welcome, Thanks.

Yes, it is possible to save all the updates. I have downloaded them all, the statistics are:

W98 Updates
Size: 166 MB (174,858,269 bytes)
Contains: 154 Files, 86 Folders

There are 4 main folders.

1. com_microsoft.internetexplorer6x
Size: 19.9 MB (20,926,157 bytes)
Contains: 16 Files, 9 Folders

2. com_microsoft.internetexplorer50x
Size: 13.6 MB (14,318,177 bytes)
Contains: 14 Files, 8 Folders

3. com_microsoft.internetexplorer55x
Size: 14.2 MB (15,030,406 bytes)
Contains: 8 Files, 5 Folders

4. com_microsoft.windows98andwindows98secondedition
Size: 118 MB (124,283,297 bytes)
Contains: 114 Files, 58 Folders

Obviously, you probably don't need them all but I figured it would be safer to get them all ... just in case. I will probably check periodically just to make sure no new updates are added. If they are, I will get those too.

Right-click on the links in the MS database and "Save as" to your hard drive.

Thanks, is it possible to save the updates for a version of windows you are not running, ie I could download the win98 patches on a winxp machine, as I know the update site scans your pc for updates and only shows those for your windows version.

I had approximately 26.2 GB of saved downloaded material when this post was originally made. I now have 39.2 GB of DL material and 161 MB of DL-Purchased material. Some from as far back as DOS and Win3.1, all now stored on an external HD connected to a WinXP machine.

All my Win98 updates are there just waiting for a time I might need them. A bit pattern is a bit pattern. As long as it is not changed it doesn't matter where it is stored as long as it is only run in its intended environment.
