Postby aharq » Fri 2008 Jan 11 8:08

system: asus a8nvm with amd athlon 3200 processor,1 gig ram,250gb hd,no cards
430w power supply,lcd monitor.

symptom: os will not boot.will post and i can get into bios.will go into windows splash screen then the disk read error occured or into a black screen saying windows could not start up, pleASE TRY THE FOLLOWING OPTIONS.

i have reset power and data connectors
clean installed windows xp pro
recovered from registry corruption
recovered from data corruption using checkdisk
waiting for new power supply as asus told me the 12v current should be capable of 35a
or better.the current ps has 12v 18a max.

corruption is occuring. i wonder if there is enough current on the 12v rail and that is seriously affecting system operation?

any suggestions are welcome!

Have you recently installed some new hardware? It is possible to have the correct voltage but not enough current to run all your devices.

I am actually wondering how the bios settings are, maybe oc-ed and became unstable?(overclocked)
Im not thinking its a powersupply, but ram-timings wrong or proccesor problems
How does the system beep when booting?

If possible you may wanna test with a bigger powersupply to see if its that
If your ram is borked it wont boot, if the processor doesnt have any paste between the cpu and the heatsink it wont boot, mind you : period.
so that aint it.
try, if possible, booting with one ram stick, if not let us know.

Safe mode?
Booting with the win cd in the machine?

So what you want to do is this:

Boot with the most "empty" system possible, no cards smal hd, like really small, 1 ram stick, ps2 mouse and keybord and tell us what you get

Everything before your mention of the Registry should be OK. If the Registry is definitely corrupt, why not do a "Repair" install instead of a wipe and full install? A repair should fix any corrupted files and restore any missing ones. That may be all you need.

But if you are going for the fresh install, you definitly need the mobo driver on the system, and no i dont see why one should keep a system on just idleing.
A system is there to be used, and if possible the way you want it :pcbang:

Don't even think about starting a clean install without the CD key! :O You will get part way and get stuck when you cannot enter the correct key.

What kind of install CD is it? Is it an OEM CD/DVD? If so, the key may be on a sticker on the side of the computer.

If it's an MS Upgrade disk, the key should be on a certificate that came inside the original box.

If you still cannot find the key and haven't yet started the new install, it should be in the registry.

i have a xp pro cd and did the install. turned system off to verify it would boot. no go.back to the b/w screen saying windows did not load.
no access to safemode or last known configuration. lastly i tried another eide hd with the same result. system is bare. could ram sticks be bad?
they were replaced a few months ago. have no reason to suspect them. my thinking leads me to the motherboard as bad. comments invited.

Is your computer a store bought computer, a kit-built computer, or a refurbished combo?

How old is it? How old are the parts?

You seem to be having an awful lot of trouble for such a simple system. Have you checked to see if you have a boot sector virus? If so, the will survive a format and are activated before an anti-virus program has a chance to clean them.

anti-virus and spyware scans have been run previously on the system.does avg catch the boot sector virus?
i rma'd the m/b,though the processor could be bad? once i get the m/b back should i bench test
the bare system outside the case?
i've heard asus m/b are great.my experience is not so positive.

recovered from registry corruption
recovered from data corruption using Checkdisk

I'm a bit confused.

Did you run a registry repair and it fixed the issue?

Did you Checkdisk and it fixed the issue?

At the same time or different times and it worked temporarily both times?

I've heard asus m/b are great.my experience is not so positive.

A board only does what you buy it to do. Why did you buy it?

last week i received another mobo from asus and a new processor amd 64 3800 with heatsink fan.setup the motherboard
"bare" and on a wood table.installed the m/b and hsf, and 1 stick of memory.fired it up with success.the keyboard froze so i reset and windows boots and i am happy to see this computer work as it should.i did have to call microsoft for another cd key.they gave me one with no hassle. i upgraded to a better power supply, one that has twice the current draw and a large 120mm fan.i am still not sure where the problem was.it cost me a new power supply, and sending mb to asus for a swap,
and several calls to tech support. a real learning experience!
thanks spock, cmptch, and krank for your suggestions.

You're very welcome. I just wish we had been able to help you more but it is quite hard to troubleshoot long-distance, though it is possible.

I remember once having to replace a MB for a customer because it would not connect to a LAN. Everything worked perfectly except connectivity and it was a brand new MB!
